I recently launched a new budgeting web app. I put a lot of work integrating user accounts with Auth0 and subscription management with Stripe. I wrote it in my spare time after my full time job so these integrations probably added a month of development time to launch. Anyhow, I'm having very minimal user signups and having trouble getting people to engage with the app. I'm at the point where I'm basically going to allow access to the primary features for free without any account, just to get some activity.
So it dawned on me. Why did I even spend all that time on user accounts and subscriptions when I didn't even know if people would like the app? I could have launched the thing for free without the accounts and subscription just to see if people liked it and then spent the time to add that functionality later. Doh. Lesson learned for next time.
