I’m John,
I work full time as a web developer and now I’m starting a window cleaning business…
The Plan
I plan on using everything I know about conversions, SEO, web development, digital marketing, and Google Ads to give me an online edge over all of my local competition.
How did I become a developer?
A few years back, I was really depressed after a breakup and gripping at straws to find something to do with my life. I took a PSW course (Working with elderly people) and passed but it was a terrible job.
I decided I should start a business, but I knew NOTHING about web development or SEO. I remember getting a Wix website and writing “Toronto window cleaning” as many times as I could fit in the footer (It was black text on a black background), so you couldn’t see it.
I thought this was SEO and I would shoot to #1 on Google, lol. We all start somewhere…
From there, I moved up to Wordpress, but had NO idea what I was doing and no one called me. Turns out having a website alone is NOT enough to make the phone ring.
To make matters worse, I wasted $600 designing and sending out a couple thousand postcards to a neighbourhood and Toronto and NO ONE CALLED
It was a bit of a blow since I was 10k in credit card debt already.
All of this REALLY SUCKED, but it led me down a great path. After this, I learned that I love making websites, so I took a coding bootcamp and was employed as a developer 3 weeks after graduating.
I’ve been with this employer for almost 2 years now and love it and I live with an amazing girlfriend who I’m going to propose to in a few months.
So why am I starting a window cleaning business…again
I have learned a TON. I’ve invested a lot of time and money into learning skills that my competition doesn’t have. I love being a developer, but like a lot of you guys, I want to be the captain of my ship.
How am I going get business in Spring 2019
For year 1, it’s ALL online marketing (I do have vehicle lettering though). I built my website Toronto Window Cleaning and I’ve built it in a way that my competition hasn’t.
1. Web copy that focuses on benefits, and speaks like a real person.
- People don’t give a shit about business talk. They buy based on emotion and saying things like, “At Johns window cleaning, we care about clean windows…”. That’s boring and it’s what every window cleaning company says.
2. SEO
- A page for every city in the Greater Toronto Area with focused keywords. A perfectly optimized website with all the things Google likes (Still being worked on).
3. My site is FASTER
- Most people will leave your website after 2-3 seconds of loading time and google will favour a faster site when determining who ranks higher. I built my site on Digital Ocean, not GoDaddy, HostGator, Name cheap ect, and it shows when you run a google speed test.
4. Transparent, flat rate pricing
- We live in the age of convenience and people will pay more for it. I don’t think I can compete as well by getting people to call me for a quote. But I do have a trick up my sleeve to make my flat rate pricing go further…
5. UPSELLS
- When someone goes to Window Cleaning Toronto, they will see 2 big buttons at the top of the page, telling them to pick the size of their home.
After they do that, it takes them to a simple checkout with an ORDER BUMP (Add INTERIOR WINDOWS for $$$). If they choose to add it or not, the next page UPSELLS an eavestrough cleaning. This takes a potential order from $129 to over $300. Why is this great?
6. Google Ads
- I’m able to convert instantly (without a quote) and make more with the upsells and an order bump, this allows me to make more on all of my ads.
Speaking of ads…
7. All of my ads will go to a custom landing page with NO distractions and 1 goal…
To make them convert. It’ll emphasize convenience and trust AND because I will use actual landing pages and NOT my homepage, I will pay less on ads than my competitors.
Do you know that theres a quality score with google ads and if it’s bad, you will pay WAYYYYYY more on ads than me? Stop sending people to your homepage, you’re burning money and homepages don’t convert a fraction of what a targeted landing page does.
I want to share my journey with everyone and be fully transparent about earning. I’m tracking it ALL. If I fail at anything, i’ll be open about it, so we can all learn and get better.
I haven’t uploaded a video yet, but will begin after I finish building the website and get my video making space all set up. Feel free to subscribe and see if I succeed
Window Cleaning XL Youtube Channel
** I forgot to mention that I did work for a window cleaning company, so I’m not completely fresh. But even still, I plan on starting slow and making sure each customer is happy and that my pricing structure works.
