Registering a Business Name & Whether to Incorporate or Not

Intro

I'm a college student located in Ontario, Canada looking to start an e-commerce business that's is essentially an excursion booking website.

I've been sitting on my idea for while I'm and the name I've created for the business is perfect, available (according to a quick NUANS search) and I want to protect it.

Since I'm in school it's very difficult to dedicate a lot of time to the development of my business, so I've been sitting on it for some time now but will likely be launching it publically upon graduation (about a year away).

Problem/Questions

I've already secured the domains and have started web development, but I'd like to legally secure the business name before it gets taken.

One of my biggest worries about starting this business is due to its nature (extreme sports excursions with third-party companies) I feel like there's a lot of potential liability issues for myself and I'd likely be forced to incorporate.

My question is am I able to register a business name now as a sole proprietorship without actually starting my business/making it public? If so, how much money and paper will it cost roughly to set this up? (I'm a student on a budget right now, unfortunately)

My idea is that I'd register it as a sole proprietorship now to secure the name, then when I decide to launch it publically and work on it full-time, I would change it from a sole proprietorship to Incorporated and then start sales.

To make matters more complex, there's a possibility I may also start the business in the US after graduation because there's a good chance I may move there (I'm a dual US/Canadian citizen, so I have 2 passports, Social Insurance (CAD), Social Security # (US) etc. I figure it wouldn't be too difficult of a process as a US Citizen)

So is it possible (and should I) to register it both in Canada and the US?
