I have a passion for information security.
I have multiple degrees and multiple certifications in the field. I also have an MBA, and teach undergraduate classes about information security.
All this knowledge on starting a business, running a business, and being able to speak to my craft.
Yet...
I have no idea how to get my own company up and running.
Paperwork is filed with the state and the IRS. Finishing up getting banking taken care of. I have a website (that I am going to rebuild). Articles of organization and incorporation completed and filed. I have a legit “office” (shared office space), and have my own 800 number with phone tree, and have nice business cards printed up. CRM system, accounting system, ticket system, all set up.
Now the hard part. Getting clients. I have no idea how to get any clients!
I want to offer security assessment services, and incident response / digital forensic services. Heck, I could even do general IT services if I wanted since I have a background in it.
I have worked with some small businesses in the past, but a lot have switched to niche business service providers or are too small to really care about IT (<5 employees). So there are not that many referrals coming in that way.
All of my friends are in IT, but none in management or procurement so I can’t even get some referrals that way.
It all makes me put my head in my hands and go, “how do people do this? How do people who run terrible businesses, manage to stay afloat, and here I am with all this knowledge, and no idea how to use it. Maybe I don’t have what it takes...”
How do you deal with this? How do you manage to take that leap forward and start acquiring clients? How do you deal with the imposter syndrome?
Thanks.
Thanks for reading my rambling as well.
