Copyright advice

I received an email that a meme I used was originally their photo and asked if I’ll be sharing any profits with them?

Should I try to communicate with the person or just take down the image for now and ignore. If they want to pursue further, then I can get a lawyer involved.

I just know this can be a serious issue though and I’d rather not say or implicate anything to this person in the mean time if they want to push it further than this. I really don’t have a problem paying them for the image, but I’m sure they’re not happy at this moment and would try to extort me if I tried to communicate with them.

I certainly wasn’t trying to steal this persons work, but I understand where people are coming from on the other end of this issue. I was actually resharing the image from a different page which put their own watermark on the meme, so It wasn’t as if I was attempting to play it off as “mine”. It has another persons watermark on it already.
