Do Your Employees Respect You?

Business owners out there, do your employees truly respect you? I think we, as entrepreneurs, must take a step back at times - really take a step back - and remember what it was like before we were cashing profits, and instead cashing pay checks.

Remember? The long hours? Listening to someone else bark orders at you? The feeling you got when you would excel and over exceed expectations to receive nothing but a smile and another project to complete?

Is it that hard to say… “thank you!”

Or how about when you were promised something, and your boss didn’t follow through.

Or maybe all this is just me - but chances are if you own or operate a business, part of you doing so started with resentment toward your old boss and your wanting to do things differently.

I don’t forget this stuff. Actually, when I was on the receiving side of this un-appreciation, I told myself that my employees would be treated with respect, gratitude, I would always follow through with my promises.

Be careful what you say. If you promise something, follow through with it. To you, it may be a menial thing - or “something” to keep the employee happy for a while. But chances are, they go home to their family, friend, or significant other and exclaim their excitement about the promise you made them.

Don’t forget to say… “Thank you!” Geeze. This is the breadwinner. Just say thanks. It goes so far, and in most cases, it’s so appreciated because your competitors (I.E every other business owner out there) isn’t doing it. Trust me.

Last point…

Just like you have health issues, deadlines, doctor appointments, random things come up… so do they. Because we have the freedom to go about our day freely, doesn’t mean that we should hold them hostage because the “project/task” may not get done on the deadline it’s due. If they have a legitimate reason they need to miss, or leave, or whatever…Offer to fill in, or use your skillset in figuring out a way around their dilemma to where you get two wins:

A happy employee, and a finished product.

Guys, don’t forget what it was like to be an employee.
